Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   9/28/17

I did two versions of this scene, with different lights. This one is lit with my halogen flood bulb, which is the bulb I use most often. Tomorrow (on my blog) I'll post the other one.

I've also been working on a side project, building a little porch for a new outbuilding that my husband finished this summer. I had to work around big roots from a tree, which informed the design. I've really gotten into woodworking lately. It provides me with the perfect balance of creativity, problem solving, and hard work. Since painting is my "job," I'd been looking for a "hobby" that was different enough to compliment the other - I think I finally found it.

This was not only a colorful street, but a colorful town in general! It is in France, right next to some hills made of very beautiful dirt, and I guess they use that to make pigment, and use that to make paint to color the houses. Pretty cool.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   9/26/17

Click Here to Bid - 8x8in. - "Retail Therapy"

For one of my birthdays when I was a kid, someone gave me a set of markers. I remember not wanting to waste them, so I put them aside for "some special project in the future." Several years later I finally brought them out, only to find they had dried up!

When I got back from France and I was going through my photos, I was most excited about the reference for this painting. But I decided I should save it, because if I used my favorite photos first, I would be ... wasting them? So yesterday I decided - what the heck - I'm going to paint them in the order I am most excited about. And when I run out, I'll go and take more photos! So here's this one, and I have to say (screw modesty), I'm kind of totally in love with it.

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. "Under Scrutiny"

And now back to a bit of still life, as I have another workshop coming up - my last one of the year.

Unfortunately, I am having to raise what I charge for international shipping. I apologize for this. I was under the impression that I could ship in a (usps priority mail international) padded envelope and it would be automatically insured, but I learned the hard way today that it is not. The cost will go from $30 to $35.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   9/23/17

Click Here to Bid - 8x10in. - "Alley Cat"

I've painted this cat before. She/he posed for me for a while, which I always appreciate. We were in a little alley in France, and I was hanging around because there were two ladies down the street standing in shaft of light that kept disappearing. I never did get a great photo of them, but what a consolation prize I had with this cat!

Click Here to Bid - 6x8in. "A Wall in France"

I have a LOT of photos in my arsenal that I took because something sparked in me when I looked at the real thing. But will they make a good paintings? Hmmm ... maybe. I sat on this one for a while because I wasn't sure it would translate. Because sometimes that little thing you liked in the photo just doesn't happen in paint. But I tried it anyway, because sometimes we just have to try sh*t, and I have to say, I'm quite happy with it.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   9/21/17

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "Blue Shutters"

I've been honoring the ebb this last week, taking a little time for myself to rest and recharge. Now getting back into painting, and I thought starting with spring in France would be a good, especially since Oregon has been slammed suddenly into fall.

I was recently invited to be interviewed on a podcast about about non-fiction writing. I thought, wait, I'm an artist ... but oh yeah, I guess I wrote a book too. Ha! The interviewer, Brendan, asked some great questions - with a little different slant than I'm used to - a lot about the creative process, and my recent thoughts about that. So if you're interested:

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. "Apple in a Cup"

I bought the green cup for this one from Fred Meyer (a local grocery store). I just discovered that they have a whole line of solid colored cups and bowls. Score!
