Carol Marine's Painting a Day

On one of our mornings up in the Sierras, we woke up to no smoke! It took me a minute to realize just why it was so beautiful, but then I grabbed my gear quickly and painted as much as I could before the light changed too much. I took some pictures and finished it at home, since we never had another clear morning.

I mentioned in a recent post that one day I climbed way up to where it got vertical, and there was a snow bank melting directly into a creek. Well, before it got to the creek, the water formed a small "lake." And despite there being spectacular views (albeit smoky) from way up there, what did I paint? Yep, this. (See my easel set up in the bottom, right corner of the photo below?)

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

  CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY    8/28/18

Click Here to Bid - 8x8in. - "Christmas on the Creek"

On this day (in the Sierras) I started out painting with two of my buddies across the lake from camp. After a crappy little waterfall painting and a seriously mediocre attempt at a grand scene (with way too much in it for an 8x10!) I decided to hike back alone for an afternoon nap. On the way I noticed a little used "trail" heading up between two rocky areas, and decided to scope it out. After a while the trail petered out so I continued on, exploring, and found a whole "upper" meadow with streams and waterfalls and great views. Well, apparently there was another, easier trail from another direction, and 2 others from my group were already there! So we painted there the rest of the day and the next day as well.

I painted this particular scene from the bottom of a waterfall, looking downstream. Some big clouds were rolling in, and I decided I liked the scene best when the back, background was in cloud shadow. The reality though was that the shadows changed constantly, (which is my least favorite time to plein air paint) and to be quite honest I'm not sure you can tell that it's supposed to be sunny in the foreground. But ... I quite like it anyway, and I hope it works regardless.

This is my personal favorite from the whole trip (into the Sierra Nevada Mountains). I know you're thinking - she could have painted that anywhere - why on earth did she go all the way into the mountains to paint a little creek?! But I did. And I will do it again.

I have to admit that part of the reason I love this one is because it was a beautiful spot on a perfect afternoon (here is a picture my buddy Scott took of me while I was painting it). I was mostly alone (my favorite way to paint), and afterwards I packed up my gear and followed the creek  (and its many waterfalls) all the way up to where it met the vertical mountains you see - where a bank of snow was actively melting and forming the creek I had painted. It was peaceful and beautiful and just - the best day ever!

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

  CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY    8/24/18

Well, we had no bears (up in the Sierra's, where I was last week), but the fires caused some trouble. There was smoke every day (often a LOT), and it definitely caused some delays getting home. But it was still a WONDERFUL trip, with good friends, and fantastic subject matter!

This is my first painting, done quickly on the first afternoon, after we dried off and warmed up, after being pelted by hail (and rain) on the strenuous hike in. Fortunately the rain cleaned up some of the smoke, but it was back again the next morning.

Here's another one from the Sierras. If you know me, you know I LOVE this format for landscape painting. It's 6x12 inches. But it's tough to see here, so please go to my blog and click the image to see it better. As opposed to the first post, this one is not entirely plein air. I definitely tweaked it once I was home, from memory, and using photos I took. I am NOT one of those people who is obsessed with keeping it "pure," and never rework - instead I am in pursuit of a decent painting, at any cost. And I'm really happy with this one.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

  CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY    8/12/18

Tomorrow I will set off for the last trip in a flurry of summer trips. I saved the best for last - I'm headed back up into the Sierra's to paint and camp with friends for 5 days! Unfortunately this means
I won't be able to ship until I get home (August 20th)I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and hope that no bears (or fires) eat me or cause further delays.

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "Shiny and Dull"

I did this one with a cool light instead of the halogen I used on the last two. Because of it you can see a little more of the blues and purples in the peaches.

I am leaving you with two more peach paintings. I decided to really and try to study these guys, without the distractions of other objects. Sometimes I feel like I need to spend a month with each object in order to really begin understanding it.
