Carol Marine's Painting a Day - "Serious Shadow"

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   10/11/14
"Serious Shadow" - 6x6in - click to bid

This is another little scene from NYC. I'm still playing around with my brush hold, and really paying attention to where the darkest values are, and not going as dark anywhere else. Do you see how the dark values on the right side of the street are not as dark as those on the cars and left side?

Since my book is coming out in less than a month, I thought I'd tantalize you with some shots of the inside. To start with, here's the table of contents (go to my blog for a bigger version):

Carol Marine's Painting a Day - "City Grays"

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   10/10/14
"City Grays" - 6x6in - click to bid
I've been experimenting with different holds on my brush. Usually I hold mine like a pencil, and I think I get more controlled marks with it, but for this one (an NYC rainy day scene) I tried holding it near the end. The result is a bit messier, but also looser in a certain way. I will keep experimenting. Perhaps a combination of the two, depending on what kind of marks I want...

And speaking of brushes, I learned something that will save me (and hopefully some of you) money!! I know for certain this works on the brushes I mostly use (Silver Bristlon brights, and Rosemary Ivory short flats), which are synthetic (and wonderful) but can't say for sure about any other kind. When they get frayed at the end, brush them back and forth on the bottom of a pan full of boiling water. This pulls them back into shape like magic. I tried it the other night and was amazed. I'm so glad I put off throwing away my old brushes!

Carol Marine's Painting a Day - "Golden Garden Gully"

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   10/9/14
"Golden Garden Gully" - 8x8in - click to bid

On the last day of the workshop I just took, after class, a few of my friends/classmates trekked over to Golden Gardens park here in Eugene to paint just a little more before the sun set. This was by far the best one I did all week. Apparently something clicked.

Having said that, I would like to report a little more thoroughly about the workshop now that I've had time to think about it. I have to admit I expected a lot. I've admired Scott Christensen's work for a long time, and I have friends who've taken his class and loved it. I was a little disappointed that he didn't demo more outside (only once, at the end of the last day). And the things he had to say were pretty high level. I wouldn't recommend this workshop for beginners, or those not well versed in plein air lingo. The things I got out of it were mostly gleaned from watching him make decisions, and trying some of the things he was doing (like holding the brush by the end, which leads to more organic mark-making). He was very encouraging, and I really appreciated that. The thing I enjoyed most was his taking student work and doing paint-on critiques for the whole class. Over-all it was a positive for me, but for those who are considering it, I just wanted to give a more complete review. My 2 cents anyway.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day - "Bottled Up"

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   10/7/14
"Bottled Up" - 6x6in - click to bid
I just finished up taking a 4-day plein air workshop from fabulous landscape artist, Scott Christensen. I learned some really unexpected things, and got a lot of ideas. I think you'll see some changes in my work going forward as I try some new things. Meanwhile my weird hives have improved. Unfortunately the prednisone is making it hard to sleep, and I'm finding that unfortunately, sleep is rather important for sanity. Who knew?
