Carol Marine's Painting a Day

My back was better enough today to manage one painting - yay! I'll take any improvement. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and suggestions. Once my back is well enough, I have a plan for how I'm going to (hopefully) keep this from happening again. : )

Meanwhile, I spotted these two walking along the Embarcadero in San Francisco, rimmed by the morning sun.

I laughed pretty hard when I came up with the title for this one, because it is just SO perfect.

I was going through my photos from San Francisco today, trying to decide how I wanted to dedicate my painting time (AKA, my limited, not resting my back time). I realized I had quite a few from a morning wander around Embarcadero. When I walked in one direction, I got the dramatic back-lit effect (see top painting), and when I turned around, I got the in their face, front-lit effect (see "Man-splaining").

Next I will paint one aimed towards the water (if these folks above looked left), and then another heading into the financial district. That will hit every direction, and somehow that feels complete.

This one looks better in person, I swear. Unfortunately with these darker paintings, the darks tend to dry a little chalky, and then it's quite hard to get a good image of it. The varnish I put on before I ship it takes care of all that - not to worry.

I haven't posted (or painted) the past few days because I'm having an issue with my back. I went to the doctor and she gave me the "as we get older" talk, which ... I guess I am now officially old enough to hear. I'm trying to "take it easy," which is NOT easy for me. I'm not one for sitting around. But I'm hoping if I do enough of it, I will head off this problem and avoid it going forward. Wishful thinking? Maybe.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

I'm enamored with these busy market scenes, with their patches and light and shadow, and bits of color like candy. This gal was enamored too, though I think overwhelmed might better describe her. She wasn't sure which way to go.

I saw a lot of these little cars around San Francisco. The rear view mirrors on this one were a florescent shade of yellow, but I wasn't crazy about it for the painting. I suppose they were that color for a practical reason?

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

Here's another San Francisco scene. I had originally intended to paint this on a larger panel, but decided to go for brevity instead. I'm liking the brevity thing.

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "View of the Bay"

And here's another one from the top of Potrero Hill in San Francisco, this one with a little slice of the bay. I actually scanned this one instead of photographing it, because I got a new scanner and wanted to try it out. I think it turned out pretty great, except you can't see any of the texture of the strokes. Which ... I'm not sure whether I like or don't like yet. The downside is I can't scan a painting until it's dry. The upside is I can scan in a pinch, if I've forgotten to take a picture while the sun is up.

But the primary reason I bought the scanner (an Epson Perfection V600) is for my little abstract collages. After much deliberation, I've decided to offer them framed. I got four of my first ones framed for myself, and I think they look so good like this. This first one is called "Monday". The piece is 6x6in. and the outside of the frame is 13x13in. I'm starting the bidding at $100. (I used acrylic instead of glass for safer shipping, but this can be easily replaced if you want).
