Carol Marine's Painting a Day & WORKSHOP PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   1/15/17

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "Knit and Sip"

I am officially PRE-ANNOUNCING my remaining 3, 2017 WORKSHOPS! I pre-announce so that everyone knows exactly when registration will begin, and has a fair chance of getting in.

This time I've posted all the details of the workshops ahead of time, so you can decide if one works for you, and which one(s). They tend to fill quickly (some within an hour), so sign up right away when the time comes. I tried to pick a time when most people (in the U.S.) would be awake and home. Here's when it will happen:

Sunday, January 22nd, at 9pm CST
(that means, 7pm on the West coast, and 10pm on the East coast).

The painting above is one I did for this week's DPW Challenge, on painting foil . You don't have to be a member to submit! Join us!

I borrowed this teapot above from my friend Patti. Unfortunately (and I think you'll get this, in some weird way) it is full of pennies. So it was quite heavy, and it kept tipping over in my car. I hope she didn't count the pennies, just in case I lost one or two in the transfer!

This egg yolk is living in a lovely square bowl given to me by my friend, Dawn. Thanks, buddy!

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   1/8/17

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "Knit and Sip"

My mother-in-law taught me how to knit, and I've appreciated it ever since. It's one of those things I can sit and do for hours. Somehow it takes up just enough of the analytical side of my brain to let my creative brain wander uninhibited. My mother-in-law's name is Carol too. Carol Jane Marine, and I'm Carol Jean Marine. Funny, huh?! Thanks, Carol!

I was playing around with color on this one. The photo reference (from Seattle) was very gray, and honestly, kinda boring (but great values!). So I spiced it up.

Click Here to BUY - 10x10in. - "Casual Business"

This is a scene from Seattle that I've been wanting to paint for a while. These two guys were just perfect - perfect poses, light, background, etc. I had to make only very minor adjustments. It's been especially nice to paint sunny scenes when the snow is falling here. It's been quite cozy in my studio.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   1/4/17

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "A Random Assortment"

When the inspiration occurs, I write down still life ideas. Then when I'm stuck, I consult my lists (yes, they are everywhere). What's funny, is that I almost never paint what I wrote down, but rather, an idea that comes from a permutation of the idea. But sometimes that's all I need - just a start.

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "Home From Work"

This is a little scene from a Seattle neighborhood. I was there visiting a bud of mine, summer before last. She would drive me around and whenever I saw a cool scene I would jump out of the car and snap a few shots. If it took a while, or it was a busy street, my friend would drive around the block and pick me up again. How's that for love?!

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "Dappled Wine Bar"

This is from Pioneer Square in Seattle, where a lot of the galleries and cute little shops are. Last time I was in Seattle, I remembered another painting I had done sorta like this a while ago, and decided I'd love to try it again. Dapples are a thing for me.

How do I paint dapples? Well, depending on whether there's more dapple or shadow, I paint that first. In this case there was more shadow, so I painted the scene in shadow first, pretending the dapples didn't exist. Then I came in on top with a kind of half dapple (a value/color halfway between the color of the wall/door/ground and the lightest dapple), and put in the some splotches about where they were in the picture, but maybe placed a little more artistically. Then I went in again with the lightest of the dapples, within the darker dapples, but only hitting some spots, because in real life some dapples are brighter than others. I hope that makes sense!
