Carol Marine's Painting a Day - "Happy Flowers"

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   10/11/15
"Happy Flowers" - 5x7in. - click to bid

Please forgive me for the delay - my husband and I abandoned the children and escaped to the mountains for a little weekend camping. Don't worry, the kids are still alive and well.

This was a tough one because although the flowers were just about perfect and needed very little editing, the background was a mess. First I tried painting it just like the photo, but the background was too distracting. After trying lots of things, I ended up graying and darkening the background roses (because they were taking too much attention away from the two main ones), and simply painting and repainting the rest of the background until it worked. I admit this is an instinct kind of thing. I wish I could explain it better. But I really like the result - it's both abstract and not, which is fun!

Here are more apples on a journey. Today they are at the knife museum, admiring a particularly sharp exhibit. Boy they get around.

Tomorrow morning I will be on the Artists Helping Artists show again. Tune in to listen at 9am PST for an update on what's going on with me art-wise, or catch the recorded version later.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day - "Got My Eye on You"

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   10/6/15
"Got My Eye on You" - 5x7in. - click to bid
I've had this big orange pig sitting around my studio for a while, and I'm pretty sure I've only painted him once before. What a shame!

I had a friend painting with me in my studio for a few days last week. I was telling her about my 10-minute apple exercise and we decided to do it together for practice. I started with an apple and then moved on to a bottle. And even though I've painted hundreds of each, I still learned stuff.

What did I learn? Well ... shadows might be even lighter than I thought. Edges are really important. Lost edges on glass makes it look more realistic. But most importantly, I just got into the hang of painting these things. I am tempted to start each day with an exercise like this. I recommend it.

My apples are always busy. They are either journeying somewhere, participating in secret meetings, piling up amongst themselves, throwing massive parties in bowls, or forming teams for unknown purposes. What makes them act so?

Carol Marine's Painting a Day - "Meeting at the Square"

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   10/3/15
"Meeting at the Square" - 6x6in. - click to bid
Normally my process for painting a still life is from the inside out (island to ocean) - first I paint the object, then everything around it. But with clear glass, I pretend (for the most part) like it's not there. I paint the background first, and then I paint all the little details that make it look like glass. This works particularly well for plates.
