So, about that last workshop I taught in San Antonio ... I promised a report, so here it is. Honestly, it was like, a really great group of kids! Quite a few were from Texas, and a number from the NE, so the accent mix was quite interesting.

Here are the few photos I managed to take - sorry there aren't more.

I also didn't get photos of any of my demos, so I'll end with our group photo. Thanks, y'all, for being such great kids for my very last still life workshop! : )

I've been absent for a bit because I've been having some me time. And boy it's been GREAT! This past weekend I took a meditation workshop, which was pretty fabulous (who knew!?).

But what I really wanted to tell you is that I've decided to stop teaching my regular still life/daily painting workshops. This was a hard decision, but I've been doing them for 10 years and (after some soul searching) I realized I wasn't looking forward to them anymore (though I did love meeting all the wonderful people!!). For those who weren't ever able to get in, I apologize. Fortunately I wrote a book all about what I do. : ) I also have Artbytes (online tutorials) and will continue to make more of those, I promise.

I will still be teaching a workshop in France next year (which will open for registration soon). We will explore the little villages and then head back to the chateau to paint from the photos we took. We will also paint the views from the chateau and other locations. So, city- people- and land- scapes. Oh, and lots of eating of French food.

Speaking of, the painting above is from the courtyard of the mental hospital Van Gogh resided in for a year in France (done from photos I took there earlier this year). This is one of the locations where we will paint next year also. The grounds are fabulous.

I posted the reference photo for this (NYC) painting as last week's Daily Paintworks Challenge. Check it out if you'd like to see what I was working from and/or try it yourself!

I'll post about my San Antonio workshop soon!

And this is the last in my current series of orange slices. I thought about calling it "escapees", but then I figured it would be like listing the co-stars (the limes) as the headliner.

This is it for me for a little while. Tomorrow I fly to Texas for my next workshop. I've padded my trip with extra time to visit family and friends, so I'll be gone a total of 10 days. That means I won't be able to ship any paintings that sell while I'm gone, and for that I apologize.

I won't be able to ship until October 17th, but my stepdaughter will continue to ship book orders for me while I'm gone.

Recently I experimented with different kinds of light for my still life. For this one I tried more than one light - three to be exact. I shined (shone?) my halogen flood directly at the top left of the setup, at a rakish angle. I pointed the other two (both florescent, one with a blue-ish filter over it) at various angles, but more away from the setup. You'll notice the segmented shadows this creates. It was fun - I'll do it again.

I want to say a few things about the benefit of painting in a series. One of course is that if you buy produce, it's nice to get a few paintings out of it before it goes off. But that's the cheap me talking.

What's even better is that when I'm staring at one subject (or a set of subjects) for a while they often inspire or lead to more ideas about the same (hey, what if I tried this?!). They build off each other. Each one presents a new challenge but uses the skills I've been honing.

And lastly, my best paintings are very rarely one-off - they are almost always a part of a series of the same subject, theme, idea, or other. I may not post all of them, because they might not have all worked out, but I did them, and they made me better.
