Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   5/31/17

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "Threelips," again

I'm taking a workshop this week from a Russian artist who has come all the way to Oregon to impart his wisdom. So far it has been very interesting, and it's only the first day! I'll be sure to share my take-away's with you when it's done. Meanwhile, my buyer fell through for this painting above, so I am re-listing it.

There were lots of scenes like this in France. And every time I walked through them I was reminded of all the slot canyons I've experienced. I love slot canyons, which may be why I love these man-made ones. Some were wide enough for a small car, and at least once I saw them sort of ricochet off the sides as they drove through.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   5/26/17

Click Here to Bid - 8x8in. - "French Driveway"

When I was in France we stayed in a chateau, which is French for uh, castle. Yep, I taught in a castle. It was at the tippy, top of a large hill in a small village called Chateau Neuf de Gadagne. This scene above was the house right next door, on an overcast day.

"Green Shutters, Blue Gate"

This is actually the same house from above, but on a sunny day, and from outside the closed gate. I've been working on my foliage lately, and feel like I'm slowly making progress. The biggest thing I've learned? Variety of marks.

There have been a number of things I've been told over the years that I "should" or "shouldn't" do regarding art, and some of it I am just unable to. For a long time. And then years later I find that I have grown into it. In my own time. For example, people have said that "IF you're going to paint from photos (frown), don't be a slave to them." Well, I think first I had to figure out how to simply paint it like I saw it. Then, (as I also painted more from life) I was able to see what my camera wasn't picking up, and adjust that as I painted. And now, 20 years in, I find I edit quite a bit at times, and am comfortable with it.

So if you're struggling with what you "should" be doing, give it time. Or not. Do what feels right for YOU, right now.

I did a painting very similar to this as a demo for my class in France. I was really taken by this scene, which I happened upon while exploring the village below our chateau, and wanted another go at it. I'm not usually crazy about scenes without strong light, but this has enough built-in value shifts/contrast to make it inherently interesting.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   5/23/17

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "Spring in Glass"

I am home from my workshop in France! Getting there was rough (I posted about that on Facebook), but then it was all FABULOUS (amazing food, beautiful scenery, wonderful company, etc.). I posted pictures on Instagram and Facebook - pick your poison. I also posted my demos, but I'll show them again here (all sold - sorry that they aren't better photos...).

I took thousands of photos when I was there, so you can be sure to see more France paintings very soon!

Click Here to Bid  - 6x6in. - "Cute Times Three"

I got these tiny little vases a number of years ago at a gallery in Cannon Beach, OR. Ever since then, every year, whenever these little white flowers pop up around my neighborhood, (about now) I paint them in the little vases. Or so I thought. Apparently I missed the last few years (doh!). Here's my 2013 version.

When I was in France recently, I roomed with a gal I've "known" for over 10 years, but we only met in person on this trip. Besides being an amazing person, she's also a spectacular artist. I learned she has a youtube channel about her art, so I checked it out. Wow! For any of you who do printmaking or watercolor, or have wanted to get into either, please, please check out Belinda DelPesco! She is simply awesome.

Carol Marine's Painting a Day

CAROL MARINE'S PAINTING A DAY   5/3/17

Click Here to Bid - 6x6in. - "A Nice Complement"

Tomorrow I begin the long journey to France. First a day in Portland in order to properly say goodbye to my husband. Then 3 flights, landing in Marseille. To be honest I'm not excited about the travel part, but I'm beyond stoked about seeing France for the first time! We've got a great group lined up, and some exciting places to paint! Unfortunately this means I won't be able to ship any paintings until after I return (May 20th). I apologize for the inconvenience.

Click Here to Bid  - 8x8in. - "Old Town"

I did this one in Old Town San Diego during the convention. It was a street full of really cool buildings and only foot traffic. I could have painted there all week! It was awesome. When I was just about done, my buddy Mark Fehlman came over and gave me a lovely critique that ended up making the painting better - thanks, Mark!
